"La Calata" is one of the most ancient restaurants in the
province, founded by the Calloni family.
Around 1880 Mr. Emilio Calloni of Bagni di S. Giuliano in the province of Pisa,
moved to Lerici and found a job at the Arsenal of La Spezia; in the same period
his wife Virginia opened a small inn next to the waterfront mainly for customers
consisting of fishermen, seamen, workers, "navicellisti".
The fortune and the fame of the place were increased by their son Gino Calloni
who made the "Calata" a famous gastronomic center, a meeting place for national
and international tourism. [In an album of memoirs preserved in the restaurant,
they show up autographs and dedications by famous representatives of the political
world, of the arts, of scientific, show-business and sports fields].
The activity of Gino Calloni was continued then by his sons Aldo and Alfredo who
ran the famous place for years.
